The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today congratulated Joan Marie Aylward on her appointment by the Prime Minister as the province’s new Lieutenant Governor.

“I have known Ms. Aylward for many years, and can attest to her advocacy and compassion for Newfoundland and Labrador. She is a wonderful selection by the Prime Minister. She has proudly served Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in many capacities – nurse, union leader, cabinet minister and community leader – and her spirit will position her well as Lieutenant Governor.”

Premier Furey is also acknowledging the work of outgoing Lieutenant Governor Judy Foote.

“Ms. Foote will be remembered as Newfoundland and Labrador’s first female Lieutenant Governor. That title will be celebrated forever. I would like to thank both Ms. Foote, and her husband Howard, for their service and wish them the very best.”

The installation of the Lieutenant Governor designate, Joan Marie Aylward, will take place on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, during a ceremony at the House of Assembly. Further details on the installation will be announced in the coming weeks.
