September 23, 2024

The Honourable Derek Bennett, Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Honourable Krista Lynn Howell, Minister of Education, and the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, are pleased to announce the Confederation 75 Teachers Institute on Parliamentary Democracy.

Complementing commemorations for the 75th anniversary of Confederation, the inaugural professional development and learning opportunity for educators focused on democracy, governance and citizenship will take place in St. John’s from November 25 to 27, 2024.

The Teachers Institute provides a unique opportunity for educators to experience first-hand the inner workings of parliament and the broader structure of government, gain insight into the role of elected officials and exchange best practices with peers in the focal point of democracy in our province.

Participating educators return to the classroom with renewed energy to share the knowledge gained with students and colleagues, helping to increase engagement with parliament for people in areas who cannot readily visit the Legislature in person, and increase awareness respecting democracy, governance and citizenship.

The Teachers Institute is open to educators in grades Kindergarten to 12 across Newfoundland and Labrador, and successful applicants will be eligible for the coverage of travel costs associated with participation in the program. Further information is available on the House of Assembly website, including the application form. The deadline to apply is October 20, 2024.
