Critical Minerals Development

Critical minerals are essential for economic security and the transition to a green and digital economy. The anticipated surge in demand for these minerals is driven by the need for renewable energy and advanced technologies. Newfoundland and Labrador is home to critical minerals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and high-grade, low-impurity iron ore essential for producing low-carbon steel used in wind turbines, electric vehicles, and other renewable energy infrastructure. As the world transitions to a green economy, the demand for such infrastructure is expected to increase significantly. This increased demand will require a stable and expanded supply of critical minerals, along with new processing technologies and manufacturing capacities.

Newfoundland and Labrador has tremendous critical mineral potential that can support new mines, mineral processing, and manufacturing within the province. This potential holds significant international importance, positioning the province as a key player in global supply chains essential for the energy transition. Hosting 34 of the 49 minerals identified as critical by Canada, the United States, the European Union, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, the province is well-positioned to attract international investments, develop strategic partnerships, and integrate into global markets.

To realize the value of Newfoundland and Labrador’s critical minerals resources, the Province has committed to make critical mineral development a priority sector for the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology. This commitment includes supporting the development of supply chains that can leverage the province’s critical minerals potential and drive innovation that is vital for sustainability and competitiveness. The industry can benefit from strategic supports for innovation and research and development efforts to improve processes and reduce environmental impacts. Additionally, support for value-added initiatives that aim to strengthen and optimize components of the existing supply chain, such as the further processing of raw minerals into refined products. Support in these areas will unlock provincial critical mineral potential, maximize its value, support projects, and deliver economic development throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
