Although new to Newfoundland, by-product silages have been used in Scandinavian countries since the early 1930’s. These silages are made by grinding and acidifying meat and/or fish waste. The resulting product is a quality, high protein feed which can be stored unrefrigerated for up to 12 months.
Previous trials and work currently being done have shown silage to be an excellent feed for fur-bearers. Trials are also being designed which will test the use of silage in swine diets.
Work has also begun on developing a silage production system which is designed for “on farm” use. The system will use materials and equipment which can be obtained locally. The design will be flexible enough to meet the individual needs of the farmer.
